Top Hospitals

Celebrating the success of healthcare providers across the UK and internationally

The Trust is absolutely delighted to have won this important award. This highlights the excellent work being carried out in all our hospitals and recognises the hard work and dedication of all our staff to provide high quality services to our patients.

What are the CHKS Top Hospital Awards?

Since 2001, we have been proud to celebrate achievement in healthcare quality and improvement through our Top Hospital awards. These awards include national awards for patient safety, quality of care, patient experience and data quality, which are decided on the basis of an analysis of publicly available data sets – and an international award for quality improvement. We run the event annually to recognise healthcare organisations that have excelled in these areas. We also recognise the top performing acute trusts in the CHKS Top Hospitals award.

Did you know if all hospitals achieved the same average performance as top hospitals, then across England, Wales and Northern Ireland there would be:

  • 4,000 fewer patient mis-adventures
  • 2,100 fewer cancelled procedures
  • 4,400 more beds available
  • 1.6m fewer bed days required

How are top hospitals different?

Top hospitals perform better than the others. Here shows the percentage difference in performance on a series of key indicators:

More efficient:
  • 26% fewer planned elective procedures not carried out
  • 5% shorter length of stay (risk adjusted)

Safer for patients:
  • 3% lower misadventure rate (ICD-based)
  • Better on 50% of patient safety indicators
  • 7% lower c-difficile rate (over 2 years)

Lower mortality:
  • 4% lower mortality index (risk adjusted)

Would you like to be a winner in 2017?

We are offering NHS organisations free analysis and a presentation of their performance to explain where they are performing well and where they could improve compared to others using the Top Hospitals programme. This will help them to focus on key areas of quality, safety and efficiency and to inform Sustainability and Transformation Plans. This valuable feedback is part of our commitment to helping NHS organisations improve.

Please email

What does this mean for the winning trusts?

The CHKS awards are the only data-driven healthcare awards in the UK and as a result they have unrivalled credibility. The awards are considered a significant coup for winning hospitals which have benefited from wide-ranging positive coverage in local, regional and trade media.

Awards night

The 2017 award winners will be announced on Wednesday 10 May at the beautiful One Great George Street in central London. We will welcome an audience of over 200 guests including leaders from across the NHS and independent healthcare sector.

Sharing best practice – “What makes a top hospital?”

With over 20 years’ experience working with NHS acute organisations and from the privileged insight we have gained from running the Top Hospitals award programme, we have seen many examples of excellence in the delivery of healthcare. We decided the best way to share this best practice was through a series of reports called 'What makes a top hospital? You can download the reports here>>
