HRG4.2 clinical coding alerts and reviews 

Since introducing an innovative scheme to help trusts with income recovery for coded activity, we have helped to recover over £1.3m of additional income which would otherwise have been lost due to incomplete or inaccurate coding.

Current concern around expected financial pressures and a drive towards efficiency savings means that ensuring full reimbursement for the activity provided to commissioners is vital.  Coupled with the new monthly ‘freeze' dates and the additional complexities of HRG4.2, the importance of ensuring full income recovery for trusts has never been greater.

Using a team of experience healthcare consultants and Connecting for Health qualified auditors, we are now offering this service in two levels: 

1. Identification of individual patient records with potentially incomplete or inaccurate coding, within hours of receiving your activity data, for your clinical coding team to review and recode as appropriate
2. Full coding review service incorporating identification of cases to target and recoding, for resubmission to commissioners within ‘flex and freeze' deadline

The introduction of HRG 4.2 in April 2009 as the new ‘currency' for a considerable proportion of activity, has created a significant additional risk for trusts.  The Audit Commission's recent report on the 2008/09 PbR Assurance Audits showed that trusts were exposed to an average financial risk of 4.6%.  When this data was recalculated using the new HRG 4.2, the average financial risk rose notably to 11.2%.
