CHKS researchers have found that there was a 6.0 per cent growth in emergency and elective admissions in the year to March 2009 and that the growth varies from PCT to PCT by as much as 28 per cent. The implications for local NHS are significant particularly as PCTs are facing a funding squeeze. One area where they will have to focus attention is inpatient activity. Data from a sample of 20 Hospitals for October 2009 supports the views of nurses that they are being put under pressure to discharge patients from hospital quickly. The average length of stay in hospital was 8 days which is 3.0 per cent shorter than it was for the same month in 2008 and 2007.
